Timmy Duggan, the U.S. road race champion and Fairview High graduate, broke his collarbone and fractured his tibia in a crash Thursday on Stage 3 of the Tour Down Under in Australia.
Duggan, 30, underwent surgery Friday and is recovering in a hospital in Australia.
Duggan, who recently joined the Danish team Saxo-Tinkoff, crashed on the 83.4-mile stage from Unley to Stirling. According to team director Fabrizio Guidi, Duggan headed into a roundabout where he tried passing some cyclists while going 45 mph. Duggan lost control of the bike and hit a curb.
He didn’t lose consciousness and was placed in a neck brace only as a precationary measure.
“The problem is the collarbone is the right one and the tibia is the left one,” Guidi told . “It’s difficult for him to move.”
Duggan is expecting an extended stay in Australia before returning to the U.S. Guidi said he expects Duggan to heal by the end of the season next fall.
Duggan tweeted Friday, “Surgery done, all went well and I’m screwed back together. Time to start the long road to recovery.”
