Charter school honored for building character

North Star Academy in Parker is a finalist for National School of Character recognition, the only school in Colorado to be so named, and one of only two charter schools in the nation.

The Character Education Partnership chose 28 public schools, two charter schools and five school districts for recognition this year.

“These schools are safe places that have developed cultures of respect and trust,” CEP president Mark Hyatt said in a statement. “They show us how an intentional emphasis on character and climate translates into creating the conditions necessary for learning, safety and success.”

North Star students, parents and staff sign a code of conduct at the beginning of the year, co-principal Kendra Hossfeld said, which is a statement of 12 expectations reinforcing citizenship, respect, responsibility, integrity and excellence.
