SEARSPORT, Maine—Developers have pulled the plug on a proposed 14-story-high liquid propane storage tank in the town of Searsport, citing problems with the town planning board.
A spokeswoman for Denver-based DCP Midstream said Tuesday that the company is no longer interested in pursuing construction of the 22.7-million tank.
The company gave up after winning state and federal approvals but then running into trouble with the local planning board on zoning, noise and safety issues, said Roz Elliott, company spokeswoman.
The project was controversial in and around Searsport. Some neighboring towns expressed worries about the risk of the tank exploding or catching fire, or its potential impact on traffic, public safety and tourism.
But many supported the proposal for the potential economic boost to the region. By withdrawing its application, the company will spare the planning board from wasting time on the project, Elliott said.
