A Denver Sheriff’s deputy was formally charged on Monday with aiding the escape of an inmate from the Downtown Denver Detention Center.
Matthew Andrews, 36, was advised of the charges against him and faces a preliminary hearing on June 5.
Denver police say Andrews, a two-year-veteran of the department, helped felon on April 7, then drove him to Thornton where Trujillo fled in a getaway car. Trujillo, 24, surrendered after three days on the run and has been charged with escape.
“Matt and I have faith in the fairness of the criminal justice system,” Andrews’ attorney Dan Recht said, declining to comment further.
