American Airlines is making changes to accommodate light, efficient travelers in Denver and systemwide.

The airline announced Thursday that passengers carrying only a personal item that can fit beneath the seat will be able to board the airplane before everyone except the Group 1 premium passengers.

American said the change will speed up the boarding process and allow flights to take off sooner. The airline said it will let passengers check a carry-on bag at the gate at no charge. That means savvy travelers will be able to move up in the boarding order and avoid checked-bag fees.

The announcement comes a day after American unveiled its new “self-tagging” service at Denver International Airport — one of only six U.S. airports where the airline has rolled out the option.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
