The 16-year-old boy accused of leaving a device similar to a pipe bomb nearly two weeks ago at Centaurus High School in Lafayette was charged with attempted murder and four other felonies Friday as prosecutors said evidence showed he had a “long-term interest in explosive devices” and may have had a larger plan.
Andrew de Bartolome, who is being identified because he was charged as an adult, faces felony counts of first-degree attempted murder, use of explosives, possession of an explosive or incendiary device and two counts of felony menacing.
He is being held on $100,000 bail.
“There were steps being taken for a larger plan,” prosecutor Peggy Jessel said. “He poses a threat.”
The explosive device at Centaurus, which police described as being “very similar to a pipe bomb,” was found May 13 by a teacher inside the school.
