Firefighters in Pueblo saved the lives of two dogs rescued from a burning home Friday morning.
Firefighters performed CPR and administered oxygen to the unconscious animals and were able to resuscitate the pair. A third dog could not be saved.
The rescue happened about 6 a.m. at a mobile home at 2222 E. 8th Place, according to a Pueblo Fire Department media release.
Firefighters were on standby, backing up police officers, when SWAT members used a flash-bang device in an attempt to end a stand off at the residence, the release said.
A man allegedly threatened neighbors with a gun, after a noise dispute, and then refused to come out of the home when officers first arrived at 12:30 a.m., .
Firefighters entered the trailer to put out the fire and found three dogs that were unconscious and not breathing.
“We are pleased to state that (two) of the dogs were successfully resuscitated,” the fire department said. “One canine was unable to be revived and died as a result.”
In 2009, the Southern Colorado Kennel Club provided the fire department with 10 pet resuscitation kits, one for each station.
“This is a case where if we didn’t have the resuscitation kits available, we would have lost all three animals,” said Dep. Fire Chief Dale Villers. “Thanks go out not only to our crews for their efforts, but to the Kennel Club for providing the equipment as well.”
The fire was contained to the single trailer, which was heavily damaged and is likely a total loss.
The dogs were taken by ambulance to a local veterinarian.
