Denver Boone must die!
Really? Is killing Boone the most pressing sports issue at the University of Denver?
This is a joke, right?
And it’s on DU.
Good thing crimson is an official school color. Few things can make a fine academic institution look as shamefully stupid as a fierce, unrelenting .
And here I thought it was laugh-out-loud ridiculous when athletic director DU vice chancellor Peg Bradley-Doppes fired hockey coach George Gwozdecky for no good reason.
But now DU wants to hang a mascot at high noon for crimes allegedly committed by Denver Boone?
Um, .
When does a DU sociology professor start a petition against the Roadrunner for cruelty to coyotes?
Boone must die!
For what? That goofy grin painted on his face? For wearing a cap that falls short of PETA approval? For failure to shave his scruffy beard after the DU hockey team was again eliminated early from the NCAA playoffs?
Denver Boone is a westward, ho kind of dude. A true pioneer. Get it?
This pioneer served bravely, selflessly and adorably as the school mascot from 1968-98, until Boone was suspended for being politically incorrect.
Now, DU is intent on finding a mascot more consistent with school values.
Values like, you know, who won two national championships by a school administration that went into hiding when the dirty deed was done to Gwozdecky.
On June 6, while attending a virtual wake in his corner of the Twitterverse, former DU and current Avalanche center Paul Stastny bid a tearful farewell to an old friend, with heartfelt pain that required less than 140 characters to express: “We will miss u Denver Boone.”
RIP, Denver Boone.
Full disclosure: I live down the street from DU.
Far be it for me to be a nosy neighbor, especially in .
Hey, whatever gets you through final exams.
But there’s actually something called a Denver Pioneer Mascot Steering Committee? And the members have proposed changing the school mascot from Boone to a jackalope?
That’s dopey.
Don’t know what they’re smoking over on campus.
But this whole controversy smells wacky.
