GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A 31-year-old Grand Junction man accused of critically injuring his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports ( ) Jessie Martinez was sentenced Friday. He struck a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to a single count of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.
Martinez was accused of injuring his 28-year-old girlfriend’s son Elijah in January and waiting three days before seeking medical care. The boy was brought into the hospital with severe head trauma, a broken right arm and bruises on his genitals, torso, arms and face.
His grandmother, Linda Mitchell, says he remains confined to a wheelchair, unable to feed, bathe or dress himself.
Martinez’s girlfriend at the time, Ashleigh Wallace, was sentenced in June to six years with Mesa County Community Corrections.
