PUEBLO, Colo.—After a dry summer, southern Colorado is getting more moisture than it can handle.
Nearly 2 inches of rain fell in about four hours in Pueblo Wednesday night, closing portions of Interstate 25 through the city. A stretch of U.S. 50 west of Rocky Ford was also temporarily closed due to heavy rain and flooding from the storm.
The Pueblo Chieftain ( ) reported that lightning set bales of hay on fire north of the city. The fire was allowed to burn because fire trucks couldn’t reach it in the mud.
Some farms in the area have gotten around 5 inches of rain in the past week.
Heavy rain also fell on the farms and ranches in the state’s southeastern corner, which has been hardest hit by the drought.
