Structural engineers were headed to Hayden Middle School on Wednesday to gauge damage from an SUV that crashed into a classroom after leaving a string of dented cars and wreckage across town.

School principal Gina Zabel said no students or teachers were in the building Tuesday when a Ford Expedition crashed through a fence and slammed through the brick wall of a classroom.

The SUV also hit two moving pickups, at least two parked pickups, several street signs and a light pole before ramming into the classroom, according to The Steamboat Pilot & Today.

The Expedition driver, Richard Bomar, 26, was issued a summons for careless driving. Bomar was able to walk away from the accident, according to the State Patrol. No other driver was injured.

Students return Sept. 3, but it is unclear whether the school will be repaired by then.
