Centennial is funding three neighborhood parks to be refurbished due to deteriorating playground equipment.
The parks — Tollgate Park, Fox Hill Park and a public park at Indian Ridge Elementary School — all have ailing playground equipment that goes back decades. Centennial originally gave $50,000 to the Arapahoe Park and Recreation District, which manages the parks, to go to installing new turf. However, the district discovered the water tap fees for irrigation would make the project fiscally unfeasible, so the money was to be used on the park’s playground instead.
“You have to maintain what your amenities are because you can’t just continually build new stuff,” said Lynn Cornell, district manager for the Arapahoe Park and Recreation District. “We are continually evaluating our parks to what we can do to improve parks and add new amenities as cash flow allows.”
Work at the playgrounds is finished. The total cost of the project at Tollgate is $63,00, and Centennial is funding only $50,000.
Centennial is funding $100,000 for improvements at Fox Hill Park, although only $58,000 is needed there, so some of that money can go to Tollgate Park. Cornell said $50,000 is coming from the city to fund the project at Indian Ridge Elementary, and that will cover the cost of the project.
The playgrounds at Tollgate and Fox Hill are both about an acre, and the one at the elementary school is less than an acre.
“This is an example of cooperative government,” Cornell said. “We as a park district work very closely with other governmental entities to be creative in refurbishing existing parks and building new parks.”
