The mother of a 4-year-old Lafayette boy was charged with negligent child abuse in her son’s drowning, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Kayla Erin Barnett, 22, faces a class-three felony charge following her son, Izaiah Lopez’s in the Pine Lakes Ranch subdivision in Thornton on June 9, according to a news release from Dave Young, district attorney for the 17th Judicial District District in Adams and Broomfield counties.
The boy was found face-down in the lap pool at 4210 East 100th Ave. He could not swim and was not wearing a life vest, the release said.
Barnett was advised of the charges and is due back in court Friday. Her bond is set at $20,000.
