A Thornton police officer answering a call of a man wielding a bat and knife tried to stop the suspect with a taser Friday night, but when that failed his partner shot the attacker to death, authorities say.
The name of the 31-year-old dead man has not been released pending notification of family members, Matt Barnes, Thornton police spokesman, said.
The officer who fired a fatal shot has been placed on routine paid leave while the case is investigated, Barnes said.
Police were called to 2642 East 98th Place around 7:30 p.m. after the suspect allegedly threatened neighbors with the bat and knife and was yelling, Barnes said.
Immediately after the two officers arrived, the man charged after them, swinging his bat, Barnes said.
