The Highlands Ranch Metropolitan District is looking for help from residents to beautify a community landmark and entrance.

The metro district is looking for 50 volunteers to help clean up and replace trees, and plant roses at the 2-acre median on Broadway between C-470 and Plaza Drive, from 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 7. The median is perhaps the most recognizable entry into the community.

“Our landscaped entries and all of the landscaped parkways we maintain along the main roads are really important spaces in that they maintain a beautiful look throughout the community,” said Carrie Ward, director of parks, recreation and open space for the metro district, “which really tries to raise Highlands Ranch above other communities.”

She said earlier this year, volunteers helped remove some weeds and dying materials. They will be red, white and yellow low-growing roses that can withstand harsh conditions along the roadway.

“We like that color combination, we think it’ll really pop out there,” Ward said.

The project is part of a series of statewide projects being directed by Xcel Energy and part of the company’s third annual Day of Service events that started out as volunteer work done by Xcel employees, but has since branched out to include community members to pitch in to help beautify parts of the state.

Xcel officials are hoping for 1,300 Xcel employees and 1,000 community members to turn out state-wide for the day of service this year.

Ward said all that’s left for the entry after the work this weekend will be to update the sign. The metro district is working on new designs for the signs.
