STOCKHOLM — Rovio Entertainment Ltd. shrugged off concerns about its ability to keep churning out popular mobile games as the latest iteration of its Angry Birds game hit the top spot on Apple’s App Store for iPhone and iPad on Thursday, the day it was launched.
Angry Birds Star Wars 2 — the seventh iteration of the game and the second created in cooperation with LucasArts — was released for iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8 devices on Thursday. It quickly made it to the top spot on Apple’s apps chart in the U.S., according to App Annie, a website that tracks progress of mobile applications.
The new Angry Birds game comes at a critical time for Rovio. The Finnish company is building a media empire around the success of Angry Birds — a cult bird-hurling game that centers on a flock of birds attempting to retrieve eggs stolen by pigs.
