Getting your player ready...

The crowd was young but excited for a Monday night at the as Denver’s opened with a set of bouncy grunge-rock. Singing, yelling and recklessly dancing to the band’s well-constructed noise, the crowd made up for its small size with enthusiasm. Thanks to a number of upbeat tracks from Dirty Few’s debut album “Get Loose Have Fun,” everyone was ready by the time the night’s headliner, , was set to play.

Unfortunately, Wavves took the stage more than 30 minutes late, with the excuse that the band was (collectively?) “using the toilet.” But late or not, the audience was itching to get moshing right away, shaking with the first song, “Never Gonna Stop.”

Wavves played number of songs off earlier albums, including “King of the Beach,” “When Will You Come” and “Superstar.” Appealing to short attention spans, Wavves’ music is a quick and sugar-fueled rush, like “Hippies as Punks” from the band’s newest album “Afraid of Heights.” With angsty lyrics and quick punk chords, Wavves had a tender mosh pit brewing at the front of the audience.

In the back of the crowd, though, the consensus seemed to be that the California-based band was in its prime a few years ago. New fans with x-marked hands, who must have latched onto Wavves’ latest release, went nuts when the band jumped into “Demon to Lean on.” After an hour, Wavves ended its set with “Green Eyes” and exited the stage with no chance of an encore. Disappointed, the tame punk kids trickled out onto the streets of Denver.
