Interview with David Fitzgerald-Crosby, founder
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: In the early 1990s, I quit my corporate job in Los Angeles and started a small coffee business in Summit County. It grew quickly and I bought a rough cookie bakery called Clint’s. I renovated it and created a bakery-café concept that caught on quickly and became the most popular coffee spot in Breckenridge. In the end, I owned Clint’s, Cool River Coffee House and Breckenridge Baking Company, and I had a partnership in the Inxpot in Keystone’s River Run. I left Breckenridge in 2002, and after getting married settled in Denver. I worked for Jamba Juice for a while and bought what was then an empty bakery and started Blueberry’s in early 2006 just 26 days after my daughter Danika was born.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Without a doubt, our magic comes from the scratch recipes baked daily in our bakery. Our sandwiches are served on fresh-baked bread, our bagels are amazing and although everything in the morning pastry case is phenomenal, the unique scones are what many go out of their way to enjoy.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I think we all love the people we get to serve. Littleton is full of colorful people and interesting stories. Blueberry’s has become a real part of the Old Town area, and being involved in the community is something we do at every opportunity.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Our business’s biggest challenge is our location. Tucked into the back corner of The Woodlawn Center on Windemere and Littleton Boulevard, Blueberry’s has always been the gem that’s a little hard to find, but well worth the effort. We have no real street signs, so you have to know we’re by Savers and to turn in to find us.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: That we’ve been around for almost eight years. We constantly have people come in who are new customers. They have something for breakfast or lunch, and when we ask them how it was, they say ‘Great! How long have you guys been open?’ “
