Denver police have warned police in southern Colorado to be on the look-out for a sex offender who slipped his handcuffs at police headquarters Wednesday and bolted.

Eugene Martinez, 48, has acquaintances in Southern Colorado and may head in that direction, said Sonny Jackson, Denver police spokesman.

“We’re still looking,” Jackson said Thursday. “All officers in the department are aware of it.”

for failing to register as a sex offender in an April indecent exposure case. A detective handcuffed him to a bench in a room on the building’s lower level and went upstairs to prepare an interview room. When the detective returned to get Martinez 18 minutes later, he was gone, Jackson said.

Police described Martinez as about 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing 120 pounds. He has a tattoo on his chest of a guitar with wings and the name “Diane.” He also has a scar on his forehead.
