CORTEZ, Colo.—A 38-year-old Cortez woman accused of stabbing a man to death with a kitchen knife has been charged with second-degree murder.
The Cortez Journal reports ( ) a grand jury indicted Valerie Espinoza earlier this week, and a motion to drop the initial first-degree murder charge is expected.
Espinoza is accused of stabbing 62-year-old Charles Chaves seven times in his upper body during the attack in the early-morning hours of Sept. 19. A roommate who discovered the man lying on a bed “gasping for air” says he recovered a bloody butcher knife from Espinoza before she left the scene.
