Inmate Darrell Havens is paralyzed

It’s a lot to spend on a prisoner in a wheelchair who many will say poses no threat to society.

Still, we don’t think Havens, 26, should be released from prison right now, as he has requested.

Here’s why: Havens was sentenced to 20 years in 2008 after he tried to run down an Arvada police officer who was attempting to arrest him behind the wheel of a stolen car. The cop shot Havens multiple times, paralyzing him.

By Havens’ own admission, he’d stolen dozens of cars before, and police say his thefts were getting increasingly dangerous.

And he hasn’t been a model prisoner. Authorities say he’s had pot smuggled to him in prison twice.

For the sake of justice, Havens should serve until 2016, when he is eligible for parole, before his early release is considered.
