Interview with Kim Morgan, president

How did you get involved in this business?

I have shown dogs in conformation and obedience for years. When we moved to Colorado, I decided I would love to open a store that would be like a “doggie heaven.”

What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

We try to have a large selection of healthy food and treats, plus great toys, collars and beds. We absolutely dote on any pet that comes in; they are like family to us. On a visit by a dog for the first time, they get to pick a toy from the free toy box. We don’t provide services, we don’t want to do anything that would make a dog not want to come in.

What do you like best about your line of work?

The incredible animals and awesome people that love them.

What is your business’ biggest challenge?

We see a lot of the big national brands catching on to the movement of folks feeding their pets a healthier food. They are marketing their foods to be healthy, which couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s amazing what deep pockets can do to make a poor product look appealing.

Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

People are surprised to learn that the foods that we have in common with the big-box pet stores are actually cheaper at Muttz.
