PASADENA, Calif. — Michael Adkins II, Colorado’s leading rusher, didn’t suit up for Saturday’s game against UCLA because of lingering effects from a concussion.
The true freshman, who’s averaging 73.8 rushing yards per game, suffered the concussion the previous week against Arizona. He underwent tests last week and was listed as a game-time decision.
“He didn’t look good Thursday and still had a little bit of a headache,” coach Mike MacIntyre said. “So there was no way in the world we were even going to try it. But we brought him because he’s from San Diego and he wanted to play.”
Paul Richardson, fourth nationally in receiving yards per game (130.6), started after treating a sprained ankle during the week. He had seven catches for 70 yards and a 7-yard touchdown for a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter.
“By game time he was (100 percent),” MacIntyre said.
No pass rush. Colorado showed signs of a pass rush but could never sack UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley.
“We did get there a few times, but we didn’t get him down,” MacIntyre said. “He got away from us. Credit to him. He’s pretty good. He’s pretty good at seeing the rush and moving the pocket and kind of runs around in there.”
In five league games, Colorado has four sacks.
James doesn’t start. Jordan James, the Bruins’ leading rusher at 115.8 yards per game, returned after missing the last two games with an ankle injury.
He came off the bench to rush six times for 8 yards.
Fourth and short. Will Oliver went 3-for-5 on field goals and is 14-of-18 on the year. … It was Colorado’s 13th straight loss to a ranked team. … Sefo Liufau’s season stats: 74-of-114 for 826 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions. … Cornerback Jeffrey Hall replaced Kenneth Crawley, who sprained his ankle in Thursday’s practice and is day to day.
