Denver International Airport offers the most healthful food options for airports nationwide, claiming the top spot on an annual ranking for the first time in 10 years, according to a new survey by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

The ranking found that 86 percent of DIA’s restaurants offered at least one high-fiber, cholesterol-free menu item, helping lift the airport from its ninth-place showing in 2012. The national average in 75 percent.

Dietitians from the physicians committee reviewed 18 of the busiest airports in the U.S. between April and August, classifying something as healthful only if it includes at least two of the four food groups on the committee’s “power plate,” which are fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes.

Included in the review were both fast-casual restaurant chains — including larger coffee shops and bakeries — and higher-end restaurants. It does not consider snack-food kiosks, small coffee shops or newspaper stands in the survey.

DIA began last winter aimed at revamping its food offerings.
