Interview with Jim Bartlett, co-founder and CEO

How did you get involved in this business?

One of our founders was laid off “one time too many” in 2008 and felt called to start this business. We started with one technician in the field and no office staff; now there are 10 field techs and two people in the office.

What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

Since we can perform a wide range of services for our clients, including everything from small-repair or maintenance items to full kitchen and bath remodels, we’re a true “one-call solution” serving customers across the greater Denver metro area. From electrical, plumbing, drywall, tile, interior trim, flooring and framing to roof repairs, sprinklers, siding, masonry, caulking and painting – we do it all.

What do you like best about your line of work?

The opportunity to solve thorny problems for our clients. Almost every day we get calls from folks who tell us other service providers have said, “It can’t be done” or “Can’t be fixed.” We love it when we’re able to deliver solutions for those clients, helping them maintain and protect their largest asset while also saving them money. Several people have nicknamed one of our team members “MacGyver” after the old TV series, because we not only deliver quality services with integrity, we also find creative solutions to difficult problems.

What is your business’ biggest challenge?

Our biggest challenge is keeping up with the growing market demand for our services. While we continue to grow, so does the inflow of calls and e-mails requesting our help. We’re staying caught up right now, but continuing to manage our growth while not sacrificing anything in the areas of quality and client satisfaction is definitely one of our biggest challenges.

Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

Many couples we know have had to avoid working together in a family-owned business to ensure tranquility of the business and the marriage. So, some people are surprised to learn that co-founder Michele actually quit her “outside” job because she wanted to go “full-time” helping run the “back office” side of A Master’s Hands, and because she really felt passionate about wanting to work full time with me as well as staying in touch with clients to ensure 100 percent satisfaction.
