A man convicted of shooting a Westminster police officer will spend 96 years in prison for the offense.
Larry Gomez, 34, was sentenced Friday before a courtroom of about 50 police officers for shooting Derek Rogers in November of last year, according to a news release from the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
Gomez was convicted Sept. 25 of attempted murder of a police officer and first degree assault.
Rogers pulled Gomez over for a routine traffic stop when Gomez leaned out of his car, shot the officer and sped away, according to the release.
The evening before he shot Rogers, Gomez allegedly shot at Denver police officers during a traffic stop.
The trial for that offense will begin Monday.
“Fortunately, in this case the officer didn’t sustain life-threatening injuries. But anyone who fires at a police officer will be held accountable,” said District Attorney Peter Weir at the time of the verdict.
This case marks Gomez’s sixth felony conviction.
