
He may have made it to the moon and back, but a nasty case of the flu prevented astronaut Buzz Aldrin from flying to Denver to be honored at the Spreading Wings Gala.
His son, Andy, made the trip, instead, and graciously accepted on his father’s behalf.
“Buzz Aldrin is an icon in the aerospace industry, an 83-year-old national treasure, and when his doctors advised him not to travel, we were saddened,” said Greg Anderson, president and chief executive officer for . “But we understand, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.”
The Spreading Wings Gala is the museum’s signature fundraiser.
Michael Gass, president/CEO of , was the gala’s honorary chairman and helped Anderson welcome such notable guests as Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of in New York City; space shuttle astronaut Gregory Johnson; Patty Carpenter, widow of the recently deceased astronaut Scott Carpenter; Jeff Puckett, chairman of the museum’s board of directors; Elliot Pulham, CEO of ; and former Colorado first lady Frances Owens.
9News traffic reporter and pilot Amelia Earhart emceed the gala and had the pleasure of introducing Destiney Krell, recipient of the scholarship.
