DENVER—The Denver Zoo has a new addition.

A gerenuk (GAIR-uh-nook) has been born at the zoo. The male calf was born November 17, and the birth was announced Thursday. He’s named Stitch.

A gerenuk is a small antelope from semiarid areas of eastern Africa. The name means giraffe-necked in the Somali language. Adults are 3 feet tall at the shoulder with long, thin necks.

The animals stand on their hind legs to reach food from tree limbs.
