3) The Wood Brothers at the Fox Theatre — Dec. 6, sold out
Raised in Boulder, you can hear the city’s influence has stuck with the Wood Brothers as the band has moved across the country. The trio boasts a rustic sound that is as much expansive and traveled-American folk as it is Colorado native. Bluegrass dripping with vocal harmonies and twang, the band builds charming and simple acoustic numbers on its newest album “The Muse.” Though the band is based in New York and Nashville, Colorado is still drawn to the band, selling out their show at the Fox Theatre on Friday.
2) The Head and the Heart at the Ogden Theatre — Dec. 12 and 13, sold out
After a big 2013 that included a number of festival dates, the release of a much-anticipated sophomore album and a big opening slot for Phoenix at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, the Head and the Heart returns to Colorado on Dec. 12 and 13. The band’s two big headlining shows at the Ogden Theatre are both sold out, a testament to the Head and the Heartap Denver appeal. Signed to Sub Pop Records, the easy-on-the-ears indie-folk band has taken off after the release of “Letap Be Still” in October. In a good match-up, Denver’s Ark Life will open both nights.
1) Midlake at the Larimer Lounge — Dec. 9, $10-$20
In support of Midlake’s fourth album, the under-the-radar indie-psych band returns to Denver on Dec. 9. Midlake’s sloshing sound will drift through the Larimer Lounge with harmonies and powerful chord changes. The Texas band, which is signed to London record label Bella Union, still hasn’t found its way into the mainstream, but has chugged along nicely in niche circles since its first studio album in 2004. Supported by critics throughout the years, Midlake maintains a nice balance of indie cred and moderate success.
