Sweet time

Can you smell the peppermint in the air? The sweetest place in town is the Candy Cane Festival at the Hammond’s Candies Factory, 5735 Washington St. The event is free and runs on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Dec. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sample candy made fresh before your eyes during the mini-tours of the candy factory. Kids can have their picture taken with Santa Claus, sip hot cocoa, sing along with Christmas carolers and listen to storytellers. Also enjoy trolley rides, cookie decorating, face painting, a bounce house, games and more.

Hick’s holiday house

Everybody loves to decorate their home for the holidays, even governors. The stately Governor’s Residence at the Boettcher Mansion, (400 E. Eight Ave., has been fully trimmed inside and out for the holidays. Check out their take on “Vintage Colorado” during free tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, Dec. 14-20. The tour of the entire main floor includes a peek at the Great Hall and the State Dining Room among others. No reservations are taken for the 45-minute tour. Small groups are led through the building every 15 minutes.

Playful tradition

Looking for a family-friendly show? “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” turns the classic holiday story into the wild adventures of a mouse, an elf and a spunky little girl who just won’t take no for an answer, as they track down Santa Claus. Goodness Gracious! Productions presents “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” on Dec. 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 3 p.m. at the Performing Arts Complex at Front Range Christian School, 6657 W. Ottawa Ave., Littleton. Tickets are just $10. Purchase by calling 303-968-4157.

Good swipe

Once again, gift cards are at the top of just about everyone’s wish list this holiday season. Best of all, it pays to give gift cards because of the many bonus offers. Dozens of restaurants and retailers are offering customers a bonus card, coupon or free food with a minimum gift card purchase — usually $25 or $50. For example, Jamba Juice serves up a free smoothie, The Cheesecake Factory cuts a free slice of cheesecake and Taco Bell dishes up two free tacos and a drink. Plus, who says gift cards have to be gifts? If you have a favorite restaurant or merchant offering a gift card promo, consider prepaying for meals or products and give yourself a bonus.
