BRECKENRIDGE, Colo.—Practice injuries knocked Simon Dumont and Torin Yater-Wallace out of the Dew Tour on Saturday, leaving two of America’s top Olympic hopefuls in halfpipe skiing on the sideline for the season’s first qualifying event.

Dumont endured a concussion after losing a ski and slamming backward on the pipe. Anyone who suffers a concussion has to sit out for at least 24 hours, said Rick Bahr, medical director for the Dew Tour.

Yater-Wallace sustained a chest injury and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated, where “everything’s looking really good and clear,” Bahr said.

With Dumont and Yater-Wallace out, David Wise of Reno, Nev., won the event, adding this title to the Winter X Games and Dew Tour crowns he won in 2012.

“I’m sending vibes out to Torin and Simon,” Wise said. “Wishing them a speedy recovery so they can get back out here and compete.”

The 27-year-old Dumont has two gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the Winter X Games and is considered an elder statesman of his sport, which makes its Olympic debut this year.

Yater-Wallace, 18, has two X-Games silvers and a bronze. He spent nearly a week in the hospital earlier this month with a collapsed lung —an injury he couldn’t trace to a specific moment during his training.

After the lung issue, Yater-Wallace was back on the halfpipe Friday, where he finished first in qualifying. Dumont finished seventh.
