A tense standoff between Pueblo police and an armed man suspected in a shooting ended Saturday evening when police shot and killed the suspect.
Police were searching for the suspect after a wounded man stumbled into a store near an apartment complex in the 1600 block of Gaylord Avenue at about 5:30 p.m.
The man had been shot in the chest and was bleeding profusely.
Police have not identified either man.
“The guy showed up at a store and he was badly injured, but he was able to say he had been shot at this nearby apartment complex,” said Sgt. Patrick Van Ryan, a police spokesman.
The victim was in critical condition at a hospital.
Officers found the suspect holed up in an apartment with a handgun at about 8 p.m.
The Pueblo SWAT team deployed and the standoff began.
The SWAT team used a loudspeaker to contact the suspect in numerous attempts to communicate with him but received no response, police said.
“At one point, he put a gun to his head,” Van Ryan said.
Police said the suspect came to a door and pointed a weapon at the SWAT members.
Police then shot him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
