A recent found that only 13 percent of Americans knew that the National Football League is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization. The NFL, which earned approximately $9.5 billion last year, is technically a 501(c)(6) industry association.
U.S. Sens. Angus King, I-Maine, and Tom Coburn, R-Okla., have introduced a that would strip the NFL and other wealthy leagues of their tax-exempt status.
The league the change, saying it does pay taxes on all of its revenue, as all 32 member teams are required to pay taxes.
