GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission is recommending a large increase in its maximum daily fine for rule violations.

The increases were proposed following a review of fines and enforcement that was ordered by Gov. John Hickenlooper. That order came after a bill that would have raised the maximum fine to $15,000 a day failed to clear the Legislature last year.

The Colorado Oil & Gas Association that represents the industry is not opposing most parts of the proposal because penalties have remained low for decades.

According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel (), the current $1,000 maximum daily penalty and $10,000 total maximum penalty are set in law. The new rules would allow fines of $10,000 for each day there is a violation.
