CAÑON CITY — The Cañon City Police Department on Friday confirmed that last year’s Royal Gorge fire was human-caused.
Cañon City police Sgt. Shannon Byerly said the fire remains under investigation, and no other details were released.
The wildfire first was reported about 1 p.m. June 11, and by that evening, it had ravaged 48 of 52 structures on the south and north side of the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park.
The majority of the fire was in the city of Cañon City (2,156 acres); with additional acreage on private lands (561 acres) as well as lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (501 acres).
