AURORA — The Grandview girls tennis team kicked off its season with a dominant 7-0 victory over host Rangeview Wednesday.

Grandview junior Sarah Nguyen held off Rangeview senior Zandreya Joiner in No. 1 singles action. Tied 4-all in the first set, Nguyen took hold of the match, winning the final eight games en route to a 6-4, 6-0 victory.

“Once she gets in that rhythm and feels comfortable, she’s quite a player,” Grandview coach Jeff Ryan said about Nguyen, who’s in her second year at the No. 1 spot for the Wolves.

In No. 2 singles, junior Kate Laughlin beat Rangeview’s Rachel Bates 6-1, 6-3, while senior Shauna Welch topped Devin Kurek 6-2, 6-2 in No. 3 singles.

Rangeview is returning just four varsity players from last season after having seven seniors graduate.

“They’re getting a lot better,” Rangeview coach Steve Joiner said. “This is our fourth match and so compared to where we started, we’ve made a lot of improvement.”

Grandview hosts Eaglecrest at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Rangeview will play at Thornton at 4 p.m. April 1.
