Getting your player ready...

You’re lugging a big tote to antiques row, right? Then you’ll want room for one of Joanne Palmisano’s square, photo-packed guides.

Or maybe you’re one of those people who wears a fanny pack into dusty resale and salvage haunts, leaving two arms free to hoist potential treasures for inspection. You’ll still want Palmisano in your corner.

Her upcoming “Salvage Secrets Design & Decor” (Norton, 2014) isn’t due on shelves until May, but you can pick up her earlier book, 2011’s “Salvage Secrets” or at salvagesecretsblog.com.

Palmisano is full of eclectic advice and essential tips (for example, how to find out what those salvaged planks really look like underneath the paint and grime) for scroungers, reusers and upcyclers. Her new book is no girly, lacy, shabby-chic catalogue: The rooms whose appeal Palmisano analyzes include big art, modern furnishings and industrial metals, and she clues you in on the décor trends you’ll want to know about to incorporate them.

Just one example: Those retro-hued pink, blue and green sinks and tubs are back. Oh, heck: You just installed pristine white fixtures? Palmisano can show you how to set them off with saturated colors and handy storage.
