Sure we know him as the goofball-with-a-stroke-of-genius MC, but it’s refreshing to watch act serious from time-to-time. In his new video for “25 Bucks,” Danny Brown details his troubled Detroit upbringing. But don’t worry, there’s at least one trademark scene of the wild-haired artist rapping while carrying some food.
The track features ‘s Megan James, who wanders around eerie frozen urban scenes with Brown in the video. It was directed by NORTON, Brown and James, who give a gritty real-life feel to the tortured lyrics.
Not that the MC exactly went from rags to riches, but in the video he does show his progress from poverty to stability. His mother was a hairdresser who did braids for $25 for a little extra money. Danny compares her struggle to feed and clothe his family to his own drug dealing later in life. James helps set the tone with the hook as the MC returns to his childhood bedroom and is wracked with vivid memories of wishing for a better life. Itap a great clip and a rare example of Danny Brown’s vulnerability in his rhymes.
