PITKIN COUNTY — The sheriff’s office launched an investigation Friday afternoon after a body was discovered south of Emma in an isolated part of federal lands known as the Crown, Undersheriff Ron Ryan said.

A rancher discovered the body and notified authorities, Ryan said. A source familiar with the investigation said the body was a female.

Although there are numerous bicycling trails and roads on the Crown, the body was discovered in a more isolated part of the low mountain between the valley floor and Mount Sopris. Authorities declined to speculate on the identity of the dead person.
