The Greenwood Village City Council is considering an ordinance that would cap the length of motel and hotel stays at 29 days. The council voted unanimously in favor of the ordinance on Monday and will take a final vote July 7.
The city says the 29-day cap is being considered for safety reasons, because those who stay long-term in hotels often move their lives into a place that wasn’t built to accommodate items like space heaters and hot plates.
Low-income families such as one featured in a recent Denver Post would be displaced by the measure.
A spokesperson for the Colorado Hotel and Lodging Association, which opposes the cap, said she knows of no other community in Colorado with such a limit.
