3) Westword Music Showcase — June 21
Before Miley Cyrus had hit her “edgy phase” Diplo was helping to make twerking one of the new fads of popular music. But on top of his contributions to the twerking craze, Diplo has been the brain behind tracks from M.I.A., Major Lazer, Beyonce, Usher and his own solo material and mixes. His radio-friendly sound will be anchoring the Westword Music Showcase on June 21 with other acts 2 Chainz, Cherub, Man Man and King Khan & the Shrines. On top of these national acts, the annual music bash brings more than 140 local acts to the Golden Triangle neighborhood. ($35-$75, westword.com)
2) Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds — June 24, Buell Theater
When he stopped in Denver just over a year ago, Nick Cave once again proved his mastery of showmanship. In his own dark and literate way, he stalked the stage delivering decades worth of beloved tunes, and he never once seemed like he was just going through the motions. But thatap the thing about Cave: Like with many older rock stars, they have years of on-stage experience and have connecting to an audience down to an art. When Cave returns to Denver on June 24, this time to play the Buell Theater, he and his band the Bad Seeds are sure to bring a show that has the wonder and danger of a snake charmer. 1) Sharon Van Etten — June 24, Bluebird Theater
Sharon Van Etten has a pretty rocky love life, and she’s not afraid to tell you about it. Her dramatic and confessional album is filled with commands like, “don’t lie to me again.” Itap chilling really, especially in her all-consuming voice. “Are We There,” her 2014 release on Jagjaguwar, is a staggering achievement in honesty — both musically and lyrically. Brooklyn-based Van Etten comes to Denver on June 24, ready to break hearts and provide the vastness of her emotional torment to the Bluebird Theater. ($16-$20, bluebirdtheater.net)
