Interview with Mauzie Mays, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I received my bachelor of fine arts degree (with dual emphasis in painting and metal smithing) from Miami University. Even though I had experience working with metal, I hadn’t received the practical bench training necessary to becoming a jeweler. After pounding the pavement, I was fortunate to be hired by the Shane Co. It was there I received the proper training to start me on my way. After working many years at my trade, I took a leap of faith and opened Mauzie’s in 2006.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Although there is a plethora of “custom jewelers,” few have a designer who reads the customer’s input, listening to their wishes, then develops hand sketches, finally bringing their wishes to fruition. I also offer gold “repurposing,” combining the customer’s materials with my own, to create a new, original piece that maintains the sentiment of the past. Mauzie’s takes care to restore antique pieces and repair items that most stores turn away. Mauzie’s is truly a unique experience that strives to meet all of the customer’s needs. I also share space with Nu-Way Watch Repair. James Carrizales has been servicing most makes of watches and “while you wait” battery replacement for over 30 years.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I love every aspect of “my job.” I am fortunate to enjoy reading my customer’s desires and creating a piece they will enjoy for many years. I strive for excellent customer service, and establish a professionally personal relationship with most of my customers.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: I would say Mauzie’s “biggest challenge” would be location and growth. I am truly nestled away, and even though I have a wonderful following of devoted customers, our location lacks a “walk by” attention.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: One surprising element to Mauzie’s is the boutique feel upon entering. Also, our prices are more than reasonable for the quality the customer receives.
