A 20-foot by 20-foot sinkhole will prompt a full shut down of the road starting Tuesday morning so that crews can continue making repairs.

The Jefferson County Road and Bridge Division has so far been able to move traffic to the west side of Simms while crews work the site, which is located just south of Coal Mine Road, but now repairs call for a closure of the entire roadway.

Simms Street will be closed starting at 9 a.m. and there is no scheduled time for reopening nor are any suggested detour routes available from the county. Updates can be found on the or by calling 303-271-5200.

The sinkhole was caused by the failure of a large underground drainage culvert.
