Tony Spurlock has been appointed Douglas County sheriff by the board of commissioners.

Spurlock, who has been with the department for more than 33 years, previously served as undersheriff.

Spurlock is filling a vacancy created earlier this week when former sheriff David A. Weaver was appointed to the county board of commissioners.

of Jack Hilbert, who stepped down this month.

Spurlock is the Republican nominee for sheriff in the November election. There is no Democratic opponent.

Weaver’s tenure as sheriff was coming to an end because of a term limit.

Last year, after a dog-walker reported seeing him shove his wife. The Spurlocks said they were fighting over laundry but nothing physical had happened.

Spurlock began his career at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in 1980 as a dispatcher. He worked his way through the ranks, serving as commander of various divisions, including patrol, investigations and detention.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has more than 700 employees and a $48 million annual budget.
