Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is giving up control of the team as he fights Alzheimer’s. (AP file)

Re: “Pat Bowlen resigns control of Denver Broncos, acknowledges he is dealing with Alzheimer’s disease,” July 23 news story.

Pat Bowlen’s impact on Denver sports is the headline, but the Bowlens’ generosity is at least as newsworthy. For years I worked for a Denver nonprofit called Beacon Center, which provided mental health care for adolescents. The Bowlens were our biggest supporters, consistently making significant donations, but also bringing Broncos players, coaches and cheerleaders, as well as friends and business associates, to our cause. Beacon Center had to close, but the Bowlens’ support contributed to the care and of hundreds of Colorado children. This was largely due to Annabel Bowlen’s compassion, but also because of Patap generosity.

Beacon Center was not the only Colorado charity to benefit from the Bowlens’ commitment to community, and I’m sure their support of charitable causes will continue, but Denver and Colorado should pay them the gratitude they deserve for their decades of support.
