ERIE — To the chagrin of many in the overflowing boardroom, Erie’s town trustees voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve 13 new oil and gas wells close to two densely populated subdivisions.

Citizens packed the Town Hall to beg the board to reject a proposal they say violates the community’s tacit code of conduct and could be detrimental to residents’ health, property values and water quality, among other things.

The 13 wells — west of the Vista Pointe subdivision and north of Vista Ridge, and planned on separate sites, with six and seven wells, respectively — have been in the works for two years, as Erie entered into a memorandum of understanding with Encana in 2012.

Four weeks ago, the town’s Planning Commission unanimously voted to recommend the Board of Trustees approve the wells.
