During Thursday’s , Coffman experienced a moment he’d probably rather forget. But helpful Democrats are doing their best to make sure that doesn’t happen. During the debate, when asked about women’s reproductive rights and health care, Coffman struggled find the right words:
“I’m pro-life,” Coffman said, to applause. “I’m proud of that, and I do not support personhood. But I do support women’s access to, uh…” He struggled to find the phrase, until someone in the crowd shouted “birth control.” Coffman smiled and laughed, repeating that phrase and then laying the microphone on the table.
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesman Emily Bittner sent a press blast: “When it came to explaining his 20-year record of opposing a woman’s ability to make her own health care decisions and restricting her access to birth control, Congressman Mike Coffman had to play ‘phone a friend’ and it looks like was on the other end of the line. Today, Colorado women saw how disconnected from reality Congressman Coffman is, because even though he has a long history of interfering with women’s most private health care decisions, he can’t even utter the words ‘birth control’ correctly.”
Coffman’s campaign manager, Tyler Sandberg, said in an email that Coffman deserved to be cut a little slack for his verbal tripping: “Mike is a Marine. He’s never claimed to be slick, but his position on the issue is clear — he fully supports access. What’s more important to voters — the fact that Mike couldn’t find a word on the tip of his tongue, or the fact that Andrew Romanoff couldn’t find the nerve to ?”
