Democrat Jared Polis of Boulder photo-bombs his fellow congressman, Republicans Mike Coffman of Aurora and Cory Gardner of Yuma, at the annual Denver Rustlers luncheon today.
The Denver Rustlers celebrated its 30th birthday this year with its annual luncheon at Del Frisco’s restaurant, followed by a trek to the Colorado State Fair to bid on livestock shown by young farmers and ranchers.
The event always always attracts a collection high-powered politicians and civil leaders wearing and this year was no exception. Gov. John Hickenlooper, Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, Attorney General John Suthers, Secretary of State Scott Gessler were present, along with candidates who want to succeed some of them in office next year.
The best one-liner came from a Republican who said he saw Congressman Jared Polis at Del Frisco’s and as far as he could tell the Boulder Democrat wasn’t carrying any beheading equipment. (That’s an inside joke featuring Republican House .) Polis photo-bombed his congressional colleagues to add some additional levity to the event.

Since its inception, the Denver Rustlers have raised several million dollars for the fair’s Junior Livestock Sale, supporting young Coloradans as they showcase their livestock to earn money for college.
The event was started during the recession in the 1980s by Larry Mizel, chairman and CEO of M.D.C. Holdings, the parent parent company of Richmond American Homes, and Pueblo native Frances Koncilija, a Denver attorney. The kids were going to the State Fair to compete, but few were buying their livestock.
