Interview with Karen Renz, general manager

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: Karen and Tobie have loved tea most of their lives. In 2009, they had the opportunity to open a neighborhood tea shoppe that sold loose and bulk teas in a retail location to compliment their online sales. It quickly grew into a popular hangout for the neighborhood, evolving into a tea room that serves cups of tea and scones.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Nanna’s is one of the few old-fashioned neighborhood tea rooms that offers freshly baked scones, clotted cream and preserves from recipes that have been Karen and Tobie’s family for more than four generations. They prepare all their meals with the love you would get from your grandmother.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: Tobie and Karen have a great relationship with their customers, staff, neighbors and friends. Nanna’s is a warm and welcoming environment nicknamed “the pub that doesn’t serve alcohol.” It’s a great place to unwind. It’s a place to make new friends.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Nanna’s only seats 12. Without a reservation, our customers may have a wait up to 30 minutes. We are on Kickstarter to get funding to expand our 900-square-foot lower level. Wish us luck with a generous pledge.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: Once you get past our humble storefront, you will find a true English tea room with white linens. Nanna’s offers family recipes from the U.K., more than 120 imported teas and tisanes, and the best scones and quiche in Colorado.
