“Hello Denver; there are so many of you, and you stayed,” cheered early in her water-logged set at the Wednesday night. “You guys are rad!”
Of course, for a while, whether the show would go on was a huge question mark. Lighting rolled in about 15 minutes before Caillat was originally scheduled to take the stage at 8:00 p.m. A light drizzle then started, and by 8:05, a heavy downpour was in effect. Between the rain and the lightning, fans were encouraged to leave their spaces on the lawn and retreat to the main building or the tented area on the upper west side of the venue. Shortly after most fans evacuated, the stage lights shut down completely.
However, by 8:30, it was deemed that the storm had passed enough, and patrons were allowed back into the venue under a light rain that dissipated by night’s end. Caillat’s crew quickly put the stage together again, removing the tarps from the drum and keyboard risers and putting the guitars back out.
The weather meant that Caillat, opening her new tour, had to cut her set time by about 40 minutes due to the curfew at Denver Botanic Gardens, but she made up for it with an energetic, bouncy set that had some fans dancing the rain chill away.
Caillat is touring behind a new album, “Gypsy Heart,” which comes out at the end of September. However, her video for “Try” has taken social media by storm, and she addressed the meaning of the video with a heartfelt plea for personal acceptance, stating that she was thrilled that a song she had written for herself had been creating such a positive reaction.
Much of the setlist was composed of songs from the new album, including a sultry take on “Live It Up” and a raring “Never Gonna Let You Down,” but she mixed in several old favorites, including “Fallin’ for You” and her first hit, “Bubbly,” during which she got the audience to sing an a cappella verse.
Caillat proved an excellent performer, wrapping the audience around her finger, particularly when she gave an audience member one of her ukuleles. During her reggae-ish “Think Good Thoughts,” Caillat and her band steered into a cover of Magic!’s “Rude.”
She also apologized for the brevity of her set, but thanked the many fans who stuck out the weather. In fact, the venue was mostly full, even as she closed her set with a great version of “Brighter than the Sun.”
